Laura Leuzzi is a physical presence. Laura Leuzzi is a vocal force. And both claim space, demanding the domain they are entitled to inhabit. Stemming from a middle-class Italian upbringing, Laura Leuzzi draws attention to her own privileges. She speaks on behalf of disenfranchised groups throughout ancient and modern history. She admits us into her personal world as a youth and later as a woman appraised in centimetres and flesh, the body weaponised, objectified and reduced to a standard by which the very validity of existence is judged.
Laura Leuzzi is a feminist curator, historian, and writer ho has spent years exploring the place of women and their expression in art and historical records. She scrutinises the actions of feminist activists, like Yoko Ono, who placed women’s bodies and voices directly at the core of the discussion. Reinterpreting a vocal exercise by Vaccai, in which women are depicted as frail and unfit to govern themselves, the physical self and the voice grant it renewed life. MyBodyisMyPiano is a captivating, visceral, and disconcerting performance, woven together with a deeply personal yet collective narrative that spans female history.
